Yayasan Laut Biru Kepulauan Derawan (YLBKD), in collaboration with Global Conservation (GC), continued to strengthen marine protection in the Derawan Archipelago through support for patrol operations, the deployment of M2 monitoring technology, capacity building for law enforcement, and initiatives focused on community empowerment and applied research.

Global Conservation’s project in the Derawan Archipelago protects marine and coastal ecosystems by actively supporting law enforcement officers, rangers, and local communities. Together, we safeguard conservation areas and endangered marine species from poaching, illegal fishing, and environmental destruction. 

Indonesia just inaugurated its first marine radar with the Governments of East Kalimantan and Berau to protect the Derawan Archipelago, Indonesia’s most important and biodiverse Marine Protected Areas (MPA).

Recently, ten green turtles were brutally slaughtered—caught on video in direct violation of Indonesian Conservation Law.

It ranks among the most biologically diverse regions in Indonesia and serves as a critical protein source for communities across the Sulawesi Sea, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Despite its natural beauty and ecological importance, the Derawan Archipelago faces significant challenges in both the fishing and tourism sectors.

2024 was a huge year for GC, led by Jeff Morgan. This video shows land and sea protection work in Guatemala, Uganda, Malaysia, Ukraine, Indonesia, Ecuador, Cambodia, Panama, and Cameroon.

This year, GC made significant strides in our conservation efforts across the Derawan Archipelago. We began by facilitating the establishment of the Berau Marine Protected Area (MPA) Task Force, led by the Berau Regency Government Fisheries Department, followed by the Air and Water Police of Berau and East Kalimantan and the Berau Navy.

Global Conservation published a new Marine Protection Handbook for MPA Managers, focusing on effective protection using marine radars and rapid response teams to combat illegal fishing and wildlife poaching.

Thanks to Marine Protection programs, authorities successfully arrest perpetrators connected to stealing turtle eggs and illegal fishing using fish bombs.
